My Daughters Bookshelves

Both my daughters love to read. They didn't always and they often would say to me, 'Mom how can you read so much!' As I was vacuuming their rooms the other day I noticed how many books they had! They were everywhere! I think they may be turning into me!  :)

There is nothing more satisfying to a mom who reads, then to see their child read a book they themselves loved. One of the first books I recommended to my 20 year old daughter was 'Crazy Love' by Francis Chan. I was sooo excited that she wanted to read it! (Can you tell I loved the book? )

Well she also loved it and we had some great discussion on it. She has since read many books I've suggested.  :)

My 16 year old daughter finally read, 'The Healer's Apprentice' by Melanie Dickerson, which I'd been trying to get her to read for ages. I knew she'd love it because of her love of fairy tales. It's such a great fiction read based on the story of Sleeping Beauty with a spiritual warfare twist.

And guess what...she loved it and is lending it to a friend! :)

She also really loves Robin Jones Gunn's 'Christy Miller' series, which has had a great impact on her. So much so that she even mentioned the series when she got baptized recently!

Thank-you Robin Jones Gunn for your Godly influence through your books!

One thing I've tried to teach my kids is, that other than the Bible, all books are written by fallible people, whether christian or not. We need to test all things, even in books. And to learn to take what is good from a book and leave what isn't. I pray they remember that and always turn to God's Word first and foremost.

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."    2 Timothy 3:16-17

I am so thankful we have the privilege and freedom to read and study God's Word! And that we can pass that on to our children.

  1. I love seeing all those books in your daughters room! There are so many adventures to be had and places to see in a book. Seeing the Beatrix Potter books, which is what my little ones are into, just reminds me how fast they grow!

  2. Wonderful post, Cathy! My daughters love to read, too! I bought the Christy Miller series two years ago for them, but so far only 100 pages of the first book have been read. I keep praying that they'll eventually decide to read them all the way through, and if not, I suppose I should at least read them. ;-)

    Have a wonderful weekend, Cathy!

    1. My daughter was 14 when she started reading the series and 'Christy Miller' is 14 in the first book. So I think she read it at the right time in her life when she could relate.
She's not finished the series yet as there is like a thousand books in it! Well maybe not a thousand but the series seems never ending! She just finished book 12 and 'Christy' is now 19 or 20.
The books have really blessed her though and will always have a place in her heart. :)

  5. I loved the Christy Miller series as a teen. Even though I related more to Katie than I did Christy. If your daughters like the Christy series then they may like The Katie Weldon series by Robin Jones Gunn as well. There's four books in the Katie series, starts when Katie's in college. Your older daughter might like those.

  9. Cathy:

I have always enjoyed reading, but it's only been within the last 15 years or so that I've read Christian books. I recall one of my first visits in a Christian bookstore. I wanted a good book, but was fearful of purchasing one that was not doctrinally correct.

Thank you for reminding us of the importance of using discernment in what we read.

    Blessings,
    Joan

    1. It's hard sometimes. There are so many books to choose from, and not all are good.
I'm so thankful for God's Word and the Holy Spirit to help us!

  10. Hi Cathy,

Stopped by your blog this morning, and blessed that I did! :)

Reading on a day to day basis gives us the daily intake we need to feed our soul and provide the supplement that is necessary for strength, direction, and life skills! And we need to keep our minds and hearts as healthy as we can. :) Likewise, the Bible is loaded with healthy and nourishing tips to keep us disciplined and make us fit both today and forever.

    Blessings and hugs,
    Denise

  12. Oh, I know exactly what you mean. Both my daughters love to read. Emily hasn't had time to read anything but college textbooks, but I love going to my married daughter's and see the stack of books she's reading (like her mother she can't read just one). Parenting, marriage, prayer--all issues she's experiences at this stage in her life. When my editor invited me to the CBA Convention I was able to have some of their favorite authors sign books for them. They treasure them. I can imagine we'd have quite the gab fest about our love for books, Cathy. I hope your post encourages other mothers to instill the love of reading. and most of all a love for reading God's Word in their children.

    1. Hi Pamela, it's so exciting to get an author's signature. I recently bought a used book by Elizabeth Elliot and when I got home I found her autograph in it! I was pretty happy and will treasure it. She's such an inspiration.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing!
