Why Sponsor a Child in Poverty?

As a blogger who is part of the bloggers for Compassion International, I was asked to share my answers to these few questions about children in poverty...

1. Why is advocating for children in poverty important to you? Share your personal story of why you want to use your blog for little ones in need.

2. Why this child? Why did you choose your particular sponsored child?

3. Why Compassion? You could have chosen any child sponsorship organization to blog for, so why Compassion?

I've been a bit MIA when it comes to these writing promps from Compassion, due to a long blogging break last year, but I'd like to continue in sharing about them and what they do. So here are my answers...

1. Advocating for children in poverty is important to me because I've always had a soft spot for children in general. They are so precious, and need guidance, love and protection in their lives. I love and feel blessed to be able to share about these children in need here on my blog. I've been sponsoring children through Compassion for over 30 years and I've never regretted it. If my blog could encourage one reader to sponsor a child I would be ecstatic!

2. The children I chose to sponsor were for no particular reason other than they needed a sponsor. I think I just randomly picked them! God knew them and loves them and that's what counts, and as I've gotten to know them, I've loved them too.

3. I chose to sponsor with Compassion when I was 18 years old. I've found them to be a trustworthy and genuine organization who love and care for the poor, because of this, I whole-heartedly support them and enjoy sharing about their commitment to helping and serving children on my blog.

All Are Wanted, All Are Loved

I've often read God's conversation with Jeremiah:

"Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying:

'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;
Before you were born I sanctified you;
I ordained you a prophet to the nations.'

Then said I:

'Ah, Lord GOD!
Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.'

But the LORD said to me:
'Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
For you shall go to all to whom I send you,
And whatever I command you, you shall speak.

Do not be afraid of their faces,
For I am with you to deliver you,' says the LORD.

Then the LORD put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me:
'Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.

See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms,
To root out and to pull down,
To destroy and to throw down,
To build and to plant.”

Jeremiah 1:4-10

Jeremiah was young at the time and God let him know he was wanted, even before he was formed. He was loved before he even existed.

God knew him. God had a plan.

And oh what a plan! A plan of redemption, a plan of forgiveness, a plan of grace.

I recently finished reading the book of Jeremiah and it was so beautiful the way God kept calling His children back, kept giving them another chance. (And they had done some horrific things, things like sacrificing their own children to other gods (Jer. 7:30-31), and though they had to suffer the consequences (Jer. 32:29-30), God continued to pursue them, call them back and keep His promises. (Jer. 4:1, Jer. 31:15-18, Jer. 24:5-7) Oh how I can relate! He calls me back time and again.

His love is unfailing and His promises are always kept. I am so grateful and love Him even more for this. : )

Have you ever deeply thought about how God wanted you? How He calls you and how much He loves you? I think about this sometimes and it is so overwhelming I can't even fathom it, but I know it is true.

I trust Him. He is good.

Each of these beautiful children, from Compassion International's programs, are also wanted by God. He knew them before He formed them and He has a plan for each of them.

All are loved by God.

Just look at their faces.

I see outgoing smiling kids, I see quiet thoughtful kids, I see goofy fun kids.

I see children made in God's image. All wanted, all loved by God.

I recently read a biography of a women named Hannah More, she was a poet, a reformer and an abolitionist in the late 1700's and early 1800's.

The biographer says of her:

"More had a conservative approach to reform (of the poor*) centered on expanding responsibility, not rights, and promoting duty, not democracy."

More said:

"Reformation must begin with the GREAT, or it will never be effectual."

This really moved me.

As Christians we are to give up our rights and live to obey the Lord, and in that obedience we do what is our responsibility, not our right.

One of our responsibilities is to help the poor. Feed them, cloth them, teach them and share the Gospel with them.

Will you give?

Would you consider sponsoring a child in need?

Here's an opportunity for you.

#GivingTuesday!

Today, Compassion International wants to help fund and launch a brand new Child Survival Program  in Gujarat, India - ALL IN ONE DAY, #GivingTuesday!

Why a Child Survival Program in India?

Because nearly one in every three newborn deaths in the world occurs in India. And because every year, more than two million children under age five die in India.

But we can change that. We can change that in one day.

Funding this center means we can:
  • prepare moms with training to help care for their babies
  • help mothers learn to read and write
  • give children a safe place to learn and grow
  • ensure lifesaving medical care for babies and moms proclaim the hope of God to families living in poverty

Would you like to help? Today you can donate to compassion to help babies in India. You can go HERE and have a look and see what it's all about.

Hope you are able to join me in the joy of giving this season! : )

Inspired to Sponsor

Compassion Bloggers have been asked to post about what or who inspired us to sponsor a child.

For me it was Steve Camp.

When I was eighteen a friend and I went to his concert. There we sat in the bleachers of a school gym. He talked about this organization that helped the poor all over the world. I'd never heard of it before and was instantly intrigued.

That night, I felt strongly led by the Holy Spirit to sponsor a child and I have never looked back since.

I know some people think it's annoying when they go to a concert and the singer starts talking about giving to the poor, but I wonder where I'd be if Steve Camp hadn't, where would my sponsored children be now?

I'm grateful Steve Camp took that step of faith and shared. I thought I'd share one of Steve's inspiring songs  (and yes, it's very 80's) : )

Whatever You Ask

Lord I see the things you ask of me

Faithfulness, holiness and purity

I love your truth, I long to show it to the world for You

So Lord I need your help to understand

The other person who I sometimes am

I never want to live a day that I can't say to You

Lord, whatever You ask I want to obey You

To let my life beat with a servant's heart

Lord whatever You ask I know that you can give me wisdom and courage

To equal the task, Lord, whatever You ask

I think so much, it steals away

The will to make the time to serve and pray

And there are days I don't take up Your cross and follow You

But I have learned that I can talk with You

You know everything that I am going through

If I just ask I find that You're right there

Providing me with the strength I need

...to equal the task

Lord whatever You ask

"Blessed is the one who considers the poor!
In the day of trouble the LORD delivers him"  Psalm 41:1

Typhoon in the Philippines

"Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines last Friday, November 8, with winds exceeding 310 km per hour, heavy rain and flooding affecting millions of people. This is one of the worst natural disasters to hit the region since the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004."

Children's Laughter

What do you see in this picture?

It's the third week of Compassions blog month and we've been asked to write about a particular photo. I've picked this one.

Here I see an adorable little boy.  I bet he started giggling soon after this photo was taken. Maybe asking his friends, 'Did I look funny?' 'You wanta try it on?' I can hear the laughter of children having fun, each taking their turn trying this underwater mask on. Giggling till they fall to the ground. Don't you just love the sound of children's laughter?

Children in poverty are just like our children. They love to play, they love to laugh and they love to be with the ones they love.

But they are not getting enough to eat, they don't have proper shoes and they don't have anywhere to receive a proper education.

Many may think these children have lazy parents, but this is mostly NOT true. So many children have lost a parent or both due to disease and therefore live with a relative or friend. And many of the parents supporting their own children simply can not find work.

My daughter saw this first hand in Ethiopia. She told me,' mom there is just no work, no jobs.'

This is what I love about Compassion's work around the world. They help supply these needs, they help feed these children, they give them an education and they share the love of Jesus.

Action...

Our second assignment for blog month with Compassion International is to write about one word. I've chosen 'action' and I'm just going to get to the point and skip any fancy poetic writing. : )  So hear goes...

One thing I'm learning is that love is not a sentimental feeling, but an action. We can feel sorry for others and feel sympathy towards them, but that does them no good. We must take action. We must not only smile at them and ask how they are doing, but we must offer help and we must give it. That's love.

Compassion International is helping real children. Would you like to take action and help someone in need? Check out the link below...

A letter to my childhood self...

It's blog month at Compassion International and I'm happy to be a part of it again. This September we are hoping to have 3,160 children sponsored around the world.

                                               Join Me for Blog Month

My first assignment as a Compassion blogger is to write a letter to my childhood self. I'm a little nervous about this, but I'll try to be honest.

Dear childhood Cathy,

You often sit alone at lunch break and ponder. Others mock you and tell you your weird, your too quiet, your ugly, your stupid. You don't know how to stand up for yourself, so you just sit under that large oak tree and ponder. You know God loves you, but no one at school is showing you.

I want to tell you, that you are special, you are unique and loved. I'll play with you at recess and laugh with you and have fun. I'll try to bring out the gifts God has given you. Your quiet spirit, your deep sympathy, your loyalty. I won't make fun of those qualities, but try and help you embrace them.

I will talk to you about your identity. That Jesus is all you need and hope that you believe it in your deepest heart. I know you are just starting to believe that now, as an adult. Your teens will get better and you'll grow as an adult, but when you hit your 40's you will have trials that will show you God is all you need. He is the one who will be there for you, trust Him.

There are children all over the world who need to be encouraged and shown the love of God. Will you think about sponsoring one of them? Speaking into their lives and helping them with the essentials of life?

*COMPASSION'S MISSION: Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible fulfilled Christian adults.

I thought I'd leave you with a quote from J.R. Miller.

My 16 year old daughter bought his book 'Come Ye Apart' at a flea market a few years ago because it looked 'really cool' being over a hundred years old. She's been reading this devotional and told me she thought this guy was pretty wise. : )

For some reason last night she asked me if she could read one of the devotions to me. She chose April 6th. The devotion was called 'Faith seen in our works.'

Here's the quote from the end of the devotion:

"Praying for missions is right, but it is no acceptable substitute for giving if we are holding the Lord's money in our hands. God wants to see our faith."

Just a Minute

Wess Stafford is the president and CEO of Compassion International and I have to say this book is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read and if you only read one of my posts please read this one! : )

This book is filled with stories of people like you and me. People whose lives were affected by a word of encouragement. A word spoken in just a minute.

These stories will make you cry, not out of sadness but out of joy and the difference a kind word spoken to a child can make.

First of all it's important to understand what real poverty is. The poverty of the heart. Wess talks about poverty and what is really is here:

"...I grew up in a poverty-stricken West African village where over half of my childhood friends died before I was fifteen years old.

I know poverty,

I hate poverty.

I hate what it does to little children.

Its worst aspects, however are not the lack of clean water or sanitation or housing. It's not even the lack of money. Those things, tragic as they are, are not poverty. They are just the symptoms that dominate life when poverty is around.

Yes, it's good to attack the externals and eliminate them. But I know from my childhood, my academic studies, and now decades of serving the poor that the real root of poverty lies well beneath these visible conditions. It's the message it breathes into the heart of even very little children:

Give up. Nobody cares about you. Nothing will ever change. You are nothing and always will be.

Oh, the surrounding circumstances contribute to that worldview, to be sure. But when that hopeless life message finds root in a child's heart (and it can happen very early in life), the spirit of the child begins to shrivel. It wilts like a flower in the heat. The eyes grow downcast; the twinkle is gone. The fire begins to go out.

What we at Compassion do is rush to those dying embers before the glow is gone completely. With the local church, our staff, and sponsors at the distance, we frantically fan those embers until a proof of flame bursts forth. It's a beautiful thing to see..."

Wess says here of the importance of encouraging words:

"At Compassion International, we repeatedly tell our sponsors that their most valuable gift to the child with whom they are linked is not the monthly check that supports their education and health care. It's their prayers and words of encouragement through letters from a world away."

Helping the poor with external needs is a good thing, but its not enough. People need Jesus. They need to know the One who has unconditional love for them. Wess says later:

"If we only attend to children's physical health, diet, education, and self-image, we cheat them terribly. To paraphrase Jesus, what shall it profit it a boy or girl if we care for their body, mind, and emotions, yet lose their soul? That is why Compassion International keeps careful track of how many sponsored children around the world welcome Christ into their little hearts. Last year, the total was 152,000. That's more than 400 each day."

Wess giving a young child a hug :)

Near the middle of the book Wess shares his own story and I was shocked at the abuse he suffered as a child in a missionary school in Africa, which he attended while his parents were on the mission field. But the most amazing thing is how God took those horrible experiences and used them for good. You have to read his story!

There are so many great stories in this book. One of my favorites was of a little girl named Jessica. She was 6 years old when Wess spoke to a group of children in Indonesia. She was sitting in the front row and he picked her up and put her on his lap and said to all:

"Do you know how precious you all are to God? He knows you and loves you more than anything else in the world. Like this little girl...Do any of you know her name?"

'Jessica', they all called out....Jesus knows Jessica's name, but do any of you know how many hairs she has on her head?"

There was silence.

"Jesus does! He loves little Jessica so much that He keeps track of everything about her, even the number of hairs on her head."

"Did you ever look closely at the tips of your fingers? See those tiny lines, that little design? Jesus made every one of you unique, special."

Wess took Jessica's little fingers in his hands and continued:

"God loves Jessica so much he drew her very own picture on her fingers like nobody else's in the whole world."

Jessica looked at her fingers and smiled. She then snuggled deeper into Wess's arms.

Wess spoke again:

"God knew her before she was even born. He knit her in her mama's womb. And look - he made her beautiful, gave her her very own laugh, her beautiful eyes. He knows exactly what she will be when she grows up. She has no idea how special she is to God, and how loved. Jesus would have died on the cross for her even if she was the only child on earth!"

Wess says the room went suddenly quiet and he could see people in the room  about to cry. Something was happening he didn't understand.

The pastor leaned over and said to Wess when he had finished speaking:

"You couldn't possibly have known - but if ever a little girl needed to be lovingly held and affirmed, it was Jessica right now."

He later found out this little 6 year old girl Jessica, who hugged him even more when he tried to put her down, had been brutally raped a month before. The rapist got off with no penalty, no jail, but just had to pay a bribe of $300. No justice for this little girl was served. They told Wess:

"We are amazed that she would even let you, a man, pick her up and hold her in your arms."

Wess finishes this story with this:

"Years have passed since that incident, and I'm told that our brief moment together was the beginning of her healing. She is beginning to blossom again in mind, soul and spirit.

I carry a picture of Jessica with me now. I am so grateful that I got to be a part of a 'moment' that is healing and transforming her life day by day."

Wow and that is just one story from this book!

As I read through this book I tried to think of a moment of encouragement I experienced as a child. One that sticks out to me is from my 7th grade teacher.

I struggled in elementary school and often felt stupid. I just couldn't get a good mark in anything and I felt like a failure. I was painfully shy as a child and was often picked on and made fun of. I also had a hard time connecting with people because of my introvertedness. My child's heart was often in turmoil because of these things, but I never talked about it.

At the end of my grade 7 year my teacher awarded me with the Citizenship Award. I was dumbfounded. I hardly spoke in school, but she saw something in me I didn't see and it gave me confidence going into high school.

All through high school I was on the 'B' honor roll, I made some wonderful friends, who are still close friends today and had some great teachers who instilled my love of history and reading. I truly believe receiving that award in 7th grade, whether I deserved it or not, made a huge difference in my life.

Do you have a story of a moment of kindness or encouragement that made a difference in your childhood? I'd love to hear it.

I highly, highly recommend this book! It will make a difference in the way you look at children and how you interact with them. And it could make a huge difference in a child in your life. : )

My daughter went to Africa

My daughter went to Africa.

I was reluctant to let her go. But I found out God's peace is so much greater than my fears. And His plans for her so much bigger than mine. She's home safe and sound now but came back with a love for the children of Africa. She started sponsoring her first little one and by sharing her stories of these precious ones we have added another child to our sponsor list as well.

While in Africa she had sent me an e-mailed telling me that the social worker she was working with was previously a Compassion child. (My daughter had been serving with a different organization).

What were the chances!

I was so excited!!!

My daughter got to see first hand what a difference, not just our money makes, but how much our letters mean to the children.

Now being out of the Compassion program, the social worker, is helping others and making a difference in her community. And my daughter has made a life long friend.

Open your mouth, judge righteously, And plead the cause of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:9

My daughter saw children who barely had enough food to eat, yet they were sharing their food with their friends who were not part of the program, leaving themselves with not enough food for themselves.

We must speak out. We must plead their cause. Will you serve?

What 'It's about giving' means to me

I'm blogging for Compassion International again today and the theme is giving and what it means to me.

For me I believe everything we have is a gift from God...everything (That includes our pay checks) :) And He expects us to share what He's given us. (not just 10%) :) I know this is a hard concept for some, but for the believer it should be our way of life. God gives and He takes away, all for His glory and for His children's ultimate good.

The story in Luke 18 is a hard story to swallow. A very wealthy man comes to Jesus and asks how he can inherit eternal life. He's a man who has done good in his life and keeps the commandments, but Jesus says there is one more thing he needs to do. He needs to give all he has away to the poor and come follow Him. This is very distressing to him and the man leaves heavy-hearted.

I believe it is necessary to have an attitude that everything is God's...everything. We have to let go of the attitude that what is ours is ours, we earned it. We need to share everything.

I've been sponsoring children since I was 18 years old and I couldn't imagine not helping the poor in this way. It's become part of me.

I've tried to teach this to my children. And I am a proud mom because my 2 oldest children sponsor children and I know my youngest will when she gets old enough to send in support.

I also believe giving should come from the heart, not from duty. Giving should come from compassion, not because others are doing it. It should be done in love.

"And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing." 1 Cor. 13:3

God blesses those who give from the heart.

"Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to." Deu. 15:10

To please God we must give 'poor in spirit.'

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matt. 5:3

What does this mean 'poor in spirit?'

I found this chapter from A.W. Tozer's book 'Pursuit of God,' explains it well. I love the way Tozer explains how God taught Abraham how to be 'poor in spirit' and therefore teaching us. Click  HERE  to read.

Letters from my Compassion Children

Blog month is coming to an end at Compassion International and we've been asked to write a poem or letter from the point of view of a sponsored child. I've been putting this off because, well...I'm just not the greatest writer. (I'll leave that to the professionals) : )

So instead I thought I'd share some real letters from my sponsored children, whose letters have blessed me tremendously.

Both my sponsored children are from Columbia. Juan is now 17 years old and Hilary is now 10 years old.

A letter from Hilary:

Dear Mrs. Cathy

I greet you in our God's and Savior's love. I want to tell you that I am grateful for all the love, affection and appreciation you give me through the project. There I feel well with my tutors and mates. I would like to ask you; how was your Christmas? Where did you go? I had a very good time with my family. We made trips with them, we went shopping and had great fun. I also want to give you a Bible text: Don't say, 'I will get even for this wrong.' Wait for the Lord to handle the matter. Proverbs 20:22. I ask you to pray for me. I will be praying for you. I say good-bye with love and kisses,

Hilary

A letter from Juan:

Dear Mrs. Cathy

I greet you in the Lord Jesus, hoping you and your family are in good health. How are you spending the vacations in July? In the project we are taking part in the soccer Olympiads, and I hope to win this year. What grade in school are your children doing? Here in the project we pray for all the sponsors who support us. My dad has been a bit sick lately; his pressure goes down and he has to be hospitalized. He also continues with sugar problems. Please pray for God to heal him and help him find a job. My sister Keyla plans to continue her studies; she wants to be a nurse because she likes taking care of people in need. Mom feels proud of us because we want to move forward and get ready for life. We have learnt most of this in the program; being here is such a huge blessing to me, and I owe it to you. You have supported me so I can be here. Give my regards to your children, and many hugs to you all. With affection,

Juan

Juan later wrote to me and let me know his father was doing much better! Praise God!

Compassion has almost reached there goal of sponsoring 3,108 children and as of yesterday, only need 412  more sponsors. Would you like to help fill this goal? You can click on the photo below to see children waiting to be sponsored or click HERE

September 13, 2012

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank-you for the opportunity to share Compassion with others. I'm continually learning it is a gift to be able to give. I pray for all the children out there who need help and support. Some are orphans, others have families, but are struggling to survive.

You love them all. You see them all.

Children often have that faith and trust in You we adults seem to forget.

You said...

"Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God."              Luke 18:1

Children are a blessing and we can learn so much from them. I've learnt so much from my own children and from the children I've been privileged to sponsor. Thank-you for them!! You once called a little child to Yourself and said...

"Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven."            Matthew 18:2-3

Help me to be like a little child, with great faith and trust in You. I love You!

In your precious name, Amen

Help make a difference in the lives of children in need. Now is the time to sponsor a child.

Compassion International

During this Christmas season of giving I thought I'd share a little about my journey with Compassion International.

"Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy." Proverbs 31:9

I have been sponsoring children through Compassion for over 25 years and I just love this organization!

I first heard of Compassion, when I attended a Steve Camp concert when I was 18 years old. During his talk on what they did and how we could help, I felt a strong stirring from the Lord to sponsor a child. I didn't have a job at the time and wasn't sure how I was going to pay for it, but I trusted God's prompting. I believe that when God asks something of you financially he will always provide it.

It is such a wonderful experience to sponsor a child in need and get to know them a little through correspondence. I have been so blessed by the letters I have received. I write to encourage them, but often  find their letters encouraging me. I pray for them and their families and they pray for me and mine. I love that Compassion provides the basic needs for these children, but most of all it is so good to hear my sponsored kids talk about the Lord and what he has done for them through this program.

I hope to encourage anyone who has been thinking of sponsorship and hasn't taken that final step. Pray about it and maybe God will speak to you and bless you with a needy child. You won't regret it...I never have. :)
